Eartha Kitt theAmerican singer, dancer and actress Eartha Kitt has died of colon cancer at the age 81, her friend and publicist Andrew Freedman has announced.
She was one of the very few artists to be nominated in the Tony, Grammy and Emmy award categories and was a constant figure of the Manhattan cabaret scene.
She famously played Catwoman in the Batman television series in the 1960s and was known for her distinctive, feline drawl.
She had many hit songs over the years including Old Fashioned Girl, C'est Si Bon, Where Is My Man and most famously Santa Baby.
She also caused controversy when she toured apartheid South Africa in 1974, arguing that she had helped wean the regime by raising awareness of racism.
Her mother worked on a cotton plantation in South Carolina and was just 14 when she gave birth. Kitt was then given away at the age of eight and sent to live with an aunt in New York.
Her break came at 16 when she got a job as a dancer with a professional troupe touring Europe.

A TRUE STAR
SO SAD TO HEAR OF EARTHA"S PASSING SHE GAVE JOY TO MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, SHE WAS A TRUE ONE AND ONLY, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.
~ in 1985 i moved to Beverly Hills, Eartha was my neighbor & i invited her to my 29th birthday party - she didn't come, but, told me she'd heard her (wonderful) disco album, i was playing full volume on all th outside speakers, cascading down the canyon & it made her smile. soon we became lovers (she semi-complained to Dina that i'd bruised her box!) and i was hypnotized by her exotic musk, she was a grrrreat kisser, and an interesting person ~ really down to Earth. she could hit as hard as my dad! later i had some problems with one of her tenants in Hell's Kitchen (you know - the supermodel in fake marriage to gay rock star) and i wrote to her complaining about it all which i guess upset her. she then chose to sign against me (for a Million dollars) a smear campaign the London Mafia organized in 2005 to discredit me & steal the four Billion dollar inheritance poor Paul Getty had left me in his Will. it was a horrible illegal thing to participate in & sad too because it meant all that money that would've gone to charity didn't. still, i forgave Eartha, just like i did when she refused to pay me the commission for creating the road company of Wizard of Oz for her ~ she was just too much - of everything - to gripe about it & hold a grudge. i was glad she rerecorded Angelitos Negros for me as i'd told her how much i adored it. i cried when i heard she'd died, though, i am sure she's giving them hell wherever she's ended up = she's so full of Life & tarnation, i'm sure they're amused. she was one of God's Lights ~ a very exotic stitch in Life's rich tapestry!
